215 Hackney is more than just a cafe; it’s a community hub founded by Ali Kalkan and Cemal Polat, best friends with deep roots in Hackney. Originally from modern-day Kurdistan, they’ve called Hackney home for over 28 years. Their journey together began at Tyssen Primary School and continued through Stoke Newington Secondary School, forging a 15+ year friendship that inspired them to open this cafe in their beloved neighbourhood.
Ali and Cemal’s commitment to the Hackney community is at the core of 215 Hackney. They source ingredients from local, independent suppliers, supporting the vibrant small businesses around them. Their merguez sausages come from Meat N16 on Church Street, fresh fruits and vegetables from a nearby local supplier, coffee from Allpress in Dalston, and salmon from the Stoke Newington High Street fishmongers, sourced directly from Billingsgate Fish Market. This dedication to local sourcing is their way of giving back to Hackney, investing in the same community that shaped their lives.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when the cafe had to close its doors, Ali and Cemal remained dedicated to the community. They prepared and delivered 6,500 meals to NHS key workers at local hospitals, including Homerton, Whipps Cross, Royal Free, and North Middlesex. They also launched a soup kitchen at 215 Hackney, providing free hot soup and stews with rice every Tuesday afternoon to those in need.
215 Hackney’s community focus goes beyond food. The cafe is a proud donor to War Child, a charity aiding vulnerable refugee children. This mission is personal for Ali, Cemal, and their friend Mehmet Cetin, who also helps run the business. Their Kurdish heritage and family history of overcoming hardship in Turkey fuel their drive to give back to the Hackney community.
Through 215 Hackney, Ali and Cemal continue to build a stronger community, offering great food, local support, and a compassionate presence in Hackney.
